Susan Fuirst knew her paternal grandmother had died of breast cancer. Her own mother also had breast cancer. Then, in 1986, she received the news herself. The Fuirsts felt much more needed to be done to advance cancer research.

An alumna of the Skaggs Graduate School in Jupiter, FL, Goydel developed cancer-targeting antibodies with her UF Scripps mentor and is now helping bring AI to immunology-based therapeutics development as team leader at a Boston-based biotechnology company.

Costales developed tools and potential therapies to target disease-causing RNA for his dissertation. He's now a scientist at an RNA therapeutics firm.
